"'FOLLOW THE SUN''  SCIENCE SEMINAR

In these classes students are exposed to science and technology. They are encouraged to learn and use the sciences. Our curriculum revolves around two main themes – the sun and the desert. Topics that are included within these main themes are;

·        Astronomy – the study of the universe with emphasis on physics

·        Solar Energy Utilization – how we can utilize this source for humans

·        Biology – which deals with photosynthesis and human physiology stress

·        Ecology – includes desert ecosystems and recycling

Nitzana caters to a wide spectrum of ages, from the 5th to the 12th grade. We teach each group on their level.

CHOICE OF PROGRAMS

Nitzana works hard to provide teachers with exactly the right type of program that they request for their students. Seminars consist of 1, 2 or 3 day programs, one week summer camps and biotops. One or all of the subjects listed above can be chosen as subjects to be taught in your seminar.

ONE DAY SEMINAR

Students come for one day to beautiful Nitzana in the midst of the desert. We incorporate outdoor learning activities as much as possible so that students may enjoy our unique surroundings.

By way of example, students may learn about oil and fossil fuels being a current source of energy and how they pollute the environment. With continued use, these resources will soon be depleted. Young minds are encouraged to see the wind, water, biomass, hydrogen and nuclear energy and the sun as sources of alternative energy.

They may also learn about the right way to build a home or a building. Certain concepts that are included in building, can keep it warm or cool - without additional use of energy for an air conditioner or a heater.

At the end of their classes they are able to build a tiny desalination plant or a miniature airplane or car that runs on energy from the sun. The students' eyes brighten with awe as they experience first hand that they are able to harness the magnificent energy that the sun is capable of supplying us with.

TWO and THREE DAY SEMINARS

Two and three day seminars incorporate the same types of information that is taught in the one day seminar. As well, we include activities in the desert and bike trips. The location and surroundings of Nitzana nestled in the midst of the desert overshadowed by the bright beaming sun, adds an interesting dimension to the education material taught in the science seminars.

ONE WEEK SUMMER CAMPS

In the summer, students are invited to Nitzana for one week of learning science subjects combined with fun in the sun. They are provided with nice air conditioned accommodations, good food and are able to make new friends.

BIOTOPS

This program is for Israeli high school students attending the 11th and 12th grades. Three times a year, each time for a period of two days, students come to Nitzana to learn about biology. They collect information and at the end of the program they write a report similar to a thesis about what they have learned. This in turn is used towards their matriculation exam.

TEACHING STAFF

High school graduates who are volunteering a year of service called the Shin Shineem, who are well versed in these subjects make excellent instructors for groups that come to visit Nitzana. They are full of energy and the young people relate well to them. At times they listen and learn more from someone closer to their own age than older adults.

Students from Beer Sheva University also guide guide and teach groups in the "Follow The Sun" seminar.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

The "Follow the Sun" Seminar is directed by Dr. Eli Kalmanzon. Following his service in the Israeli Navy as a major, he earned his Bachelors Science degree at the Hebrew University. This was followed by a Masters degree in science, graduating with distinctions.

He went on to earn his Ph.D. while studying at the Institute of Life Sciences, the Interuniversity of Eilat of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Later he completed post doctorate studies at the Weizman Institute of Sciences.

Dr. Kalmanzon has years of research and teaching experience. He has been granted numerous grants and awards and has a dozen publications in reviewed journals.

Aside from his academic success, he has a beautiful wife and two lovely daughters.
